The Gila National Forest and the Gila Cliff Dwellings attract campers, hikers, birders and tourists throughout the year. Silver City has an attractive downtown Historic District where art galleries and a variety of retail shops give residents and visitors another reason to enjoy all our town has to offer.
Pinos Altos located just six scenic miles North of Silver City is a throwback to the old west. This historic gold mining town still has many old buildings that date back to the 1800's. Several of the attractions include Fort Cobre, Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House and the Pinos Altos Historical Museum.
Cliff/Gila is located approximately 27 miles Northwest of Silver City. Here you will find small farms, ranches and families that have lived in the valley for generations. The Cliff Schools are ranked among the top small schools in the state and the Cliff Cowboys and Cowgirls Basketball teams are always on the prowl for their next state title.
Mining District is made up of the small communities of Santa Clara, Bayard, Hurley and Hanover. These communities are a great place to start if you are looking for the small town feel and real estate that won't break your pocket book. Located to the East of Silver City they were started as homes for the work force for the local mines and smelter. The mines are still productive and are the number one employment source for Grant County.
Mimbres this scenic valley is located about 45 minutes East of Silver City on the Mimbres River. This valley consists of the Upper Mimbres which includes the communities of Lake Roberts, Trout Valley and Mimbres and the Lower Mimbres communities of San Lorenzo, Dwyer, Sherman and San Juan. Through this valley lies the Trail of the Mountain Spirits, a loop drive still called the "Inner Loop" by most locals. Several attractions include the Gila Hot Springs, The Gila Cliff Dwellings, Lake Roberts and Bear Canyon Lakes. If true rural living is what you are seeking let me show you the Mimbres Valley.
Tyrone has always been a favorite for retirees moving to the area. Tyrone's early beginnings were as an early 1900's "mine town" for Phelps Dodge employees. In the late 1960's Phelps Dodge built the homes which now stand. These homes were sold to private owners in the 1980's and most of the homes have been refurbished over the last decade.
Lordsburg located on I-10, this interstate town is an area teeming with ghost towns and is ripe with old west history. Lordsburg is where one might "hop off" the interstate to make the 50 mile trip North to Silver City when driving from Arizona. Downtown Lordsburg was once part of the famous Butterfield Trail.
